Touching the Void

…nothing can compare to the experience that Joe Simpson had on that mountain. The film is a fine companion to the book. Its sad to think that after everything, when all is lost, its not your loved ones or the best experiences of your life you think about…its Boney M.

Pedals

Took a big step this week into shoes, cleats and pedals. Also had my first big fall of the year and removed several layers of skin from my knee. It wasn’t coincidental, I slipped badly on a load of mud on the road, my usual reflex would have been to put my feet down, but trapped in my pedals i was helpless and everything slipped away from me. Something about it all makes me feel quite good, that a little bump does you good occasionally. What doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger…speaking of which…

Film Typelist

New to this site – a film typelist. So if you want to see what we’ve been watching lately on our very cheap Asda’s DVD player have a look here. There will be alot of foreign stuff and I understand that there’s a whole raft of filmie underclass who won’t watch anything with subtitles on – shame on you – you’re missing out on the some of the greatest movies ever made. When I go to France, I always buy a copy of Premiere magazine, in fact i tend to clean out the film section of the tabac (newsagents). There seems to be no distinction between Hollywood films and Art House cinema, its all the same and is judged equally. Its the sort of thing you wish would go on here, then there wouldn’t be such a class divide in the way people see films. I know it comes down to distribution the multiplex’s attitude, but I do think there is a cutural difference too. People think that Luc Besson is arty because he’s french, but I’m sure he’d rather put himself next to Micheal Mann and Jan de Bont etc. He makes arty action films…mmm…and he looks like Martin Scanlan.

Boy Racers

Every car needs The Jacky Touch, and as you can see, most get it. If you ever wanted to know what to do with your little runaround to make it a bit more appealing, then look no further. The site is a bit “functional”, but the gallery is excellent. What drives this people – the need for speed (and welding lots of bits to you car). I’d like to see Andrew’s fiat panda, or even my Peugeot transformed in this way. Sharon already calls my big fog lights on the front my “Boy Racer” lights. With thanks to Neil.

draw it up, cut it out and badge it.

These things were rarer than dodo poo at Christmas, but as soon as the rush died down I crept into Woolies and bought one. So far, we’ve used up about half the pins and plates that came with it, and I know that the refills are expensive. You can get a Badge it from the usual outlets for about 20quid, which I think is pretty good. For us mac people, there wasn’t a template or anything (its so low-fi), but I made my own in photoshop using various layers so that you know what it’ll look like. The one above isn’t great, and I think the random ones down work so well as the personalised ones that I’ve attached to cards (homemade cards are transformed, and people don’t think you’re cheap – hey it took me ages!) I will happily post any badges that people send me and I will try to figure out posting .pdf’s so that you can all grab a template and a page of badges. Imakethings suggested I look at wear it with pride a lovely site that features tons of badges and even allows submissions. Its lovely to see something so simple and un-techy and cool out in the shops for everyone to use. I’ve started to see bespoke badges everywhere lately, on the train and in the supermarket and I think most of them were made with a Badge it.

Monsterism and other essential purchases

There seems to be quite a few things I haven’t seen in the shop, but maybe I haven’t visited for a while. I seem to remember that the one40five store had a new website, and yep, I’m right. I think all the shops in Sydney St, Brighton are great, especially Yamama where Sharon and I always leave with a purchase. We had a good chat with the Australian woman who is leaving in a couple of months for a visit back home…more people going to Australia (oh alright, she is Australian)

House of Jazz

House of Jazz are a fashion label run by Hazel and Pablo. I went to Uni with Hazel and was pleased to come across this article about how the two of them got started. Hazel leant me props for my still life photos when I was learning photography at Barnet. Lovely clothes, wonder if they do a line in brown jumpers? ( I am fast becoming Einsteinian in my dress sense)
